This is the one vendor whose role is legally significant, not just experiential — booking the wrong type of officiant for your legal requirements can jeopardise the marriage's legal validity.

When it should happen

6–9 months out for popular officiants/celebrants on in-demand dates; confirm legal registration status early, not as an afterthought.

Questions to ask

Are they registered to legally solemnise the marriage in South Africa, or is a separate civil registration required?
Can they personalise the ceremony script, or is it a fixed format?
Do they require a rehearsal, and is that included?
What happens if they're unavailable close to the date — is there a backup officiant?
